FBI agents paid a visit to former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort’s Alexandria home on July 26, 2017. Agents presented Manafort with a wide-ranging search warrant as they raided his residence and collected various documents and other materials.
The Washington Post reports that the raid occurred in the predawn hours and occurred just one day after Manafort “met voluntarily with the staff for the Senate Intelligence Committee.”
Special counsel Robert S. Mueller III worked with the FBI to obtain the warrant which was far reaching, allowing agents to extract various documents and other materials.
Paul Manafort has been voluntarily providing some documents to different congressional committees who are investigating Russia in regards to the country’s interference with the 2016 presidential election.
The warrant, issued by a federal judge, suggests that authorities may have believed Manafort could not be trusted to turn over all records in response to a grand jury subpoena. The warrant may have also been executed to send a stern warning to President Trump that Mueller would not be intimidated by the President’s administration.
Paul Manafort, a lobbyist, and political consultant has worked with various international clients over his long career, including two dictators who allied themselves with the U.S. government.
An adviser to the White House quickly claimed that Manafort would hand over any documents requested.
The Washington Post reached out to Josh Stueve, the spokesman for Muller, who declined to comment on the FBI raid. Manafort’s attorney, Reginal Brown, also declined to comment on the raid.
Mueller has made it a point to place additional pressure on Manafort in recent months, digging deeper into his professional and personal life.
Experts believe Robert Mueller is attempting to build a case against Manafort outside of the Trump investigation, a move that could former Manafort to provide additional information against the current administration in order to protect his own interests.
The Senate Judiciary Committee and the Senate and House intelligence committees has already received hand written notes that Manafort took in regards to a meeting Donald Trump Jr. took with a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower in June 2016. Those notes included documentation that the Russian lawyer promised to provide damning information about Hillary Clinton.
