Florida House, Led By Republicans, Declines Request To Consider Assault Weapons Ban

The Republican majority of the Florida House has denied a request to ban assault rifle and high-capacity magazine sales in the state.

The request was made in the wake of the Parkland school shooting that claimed 17 lives. The shooting was the 18th such mass shooting at U.S. schools in 2018. The request to simply consider the ban was shot down with a final vote of 71-36. The vote was split almost completely along party lines.

Students from Stoneman Douglas High School traveled to the state capitol in the hopes of appealing directly to state lawmakers who refused to consider their request.

A photo posted by State Capitol Report Troy Kinsey perfectly captured the disbelief of the students after Republican lawmakers refused to take up their cause.

The children of Parkland have stepped up over the last week to stage Washington, D.C. based protests and demand change after their fellow students and teachers were shot and killed with help from an AR-15 Assault Rifle, the weapon of choice among school shooters.
