Trump Is Going On A 17-Day Vacation After Saying He Wouldn’t Take Any Personal Time

President Donald Trump is leaving the White House for 17 days to play golf at his club in New Jersey.

The 17-day vacation will mean Trump has already taken double the amount of time President Barack Obama took during his entire first year in office. After his trip is complete, Trump will have spent 53 “leisure” days away from the White House during his first several months in office. Obama, during the same period, had taken 15 days of leave.

As a political writer, I fully support “leisure days” for the President, as perhaps the most stressful job in the world, our Commander-In-Chief needs to unwind, collect their thoughts, and spend time away from Washington. Even when traveling, the President is always connected to their staff, other world leaders, and their constituents.

With that being said, it was President Trump who routinely attacked President Obama for his vacation and golf habits.

“President Obama is about to embark 17-day7 day vacation in his ‘native’ Hawaii, putting Secret Service away from families on Christmas. Aloha!,” Trump tweeted in December 2013.

During his campaign for the Presidency, Trump also promised he wouldn’t take vacation time so he could focus on serving the American public.

“I would rarely leave the White House because there’s so much work to be done,” Trump said in July 2015. “I would not be a president who took vacations. I would not be a president that takes time off.”

Trump also claimed that he wouldn’t have time to play golf, a statement we now understand is both a lie and incredibly hypocritical.

Let’s be honest for a moment, Trump wanted to paint a black president as lazy and distracted and he knew it would play well to a Republican base who wanted an old white guy in office.

Trump, at his core, knew that painting himself as a hardworking businessman who would run American like a corporation would resonate with his voter base and it works beyond anyone’s wildest predictions.

Donald Trump is already on track to take more vacation time in his first year than Obama did in two terms. The big difference? President Obama isn’t tweeting about every day of golf or vacation the current President takes because that’s beyond him.
